CDL Truck Driver Training: Class A Program

The CDL Class A Truck Driver Training curriculum provides students with training to inspect and operate tractor-trailers and to assume driver responsibilities on the road and at pickup/delivery points. Emphasis is placed on vehicle inspections, defensive driving, range maneuvers, motor carrier safety regulations (DOT 380-397 and a certificate for entry-level drivers), trip planning, cargo handling, size/weight laws, general maintenance procedures, hours of service, and accident prevention.

Course Details

  • CDL Class A Driver Training I
    • This course meets FMCSA Entry Level Driver Training (ELDT) requirements and prepares students for the required knowledge and skills tests to obtain a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL). Topics covered include basic operation, safe operating procedures, advanced operating procedures, vehicle systems and reporting malfunctions, and non-driving activities.
      • A CDL Permit is Required to progress to CDL Class A Driver Training II course.
  • CDL Class A Driver Training II
    • This course serves as an in-person, real-time demonstration of Road Behind The Wheel Hours and Range Behind The Wheel Hours.

Upon successful completion of the program, associates are eligible to sit for their state’s Commercial Driver’s License Exam and Skills Test.

*Licensure is not guaranteed and requires successful completion and passing scores on their applicable state examinations.

The typical responsibilities of a CDL Class A Truck Driver may vary based on the industry; however, the most common responsibilities include:

  • Driving trucks for long distances
  • Communicating and coordinating with dispatchers
  • Obeying and following applicable traffic laws
  • Securing cargo with proper arrangement and balance within the vehicle
  • Maintaining a detailed log of working hours in compliance with state and federal regulations.
  • Ensuring any mechanical issues with the vehicle are corrected before driving.

This hybrid program modality is a combination of instructor-led, via live virtual sessions for the first three weeks of class and in-person hands-on training for the remaining six weeks of class.

*To be considered for the program the following is required:
  • Hold a valid Drivers License in the state in which you are receiving CDL training
  • Pass a DOT drug screening prior to the first day of class
  • Pass a DOT physical examination prior to the first day of class
  • Motor Vehicle Report (MVR) must meet the state requirements to be eligible to sit for the CDL License examination
  • Have a High School Diploma or GED.
