South Texas Vocational Technical Institute Celebrates 50 Years of Educating and Training Texans

Leading Workforce Training Provider Creates Path for Individuals to Find Careers While Helping Meet the Industry Needs of the Rio Grande Valley

(BROWNSVILLE, TX) October 2, 2023 South Texas Vocational Technical Institute (STVT) will mark 50 years of educating and training Texans with a special anniversary celebration at each of its five campuses on October 10 from noon-3:00 p.m. What started in Brownsville in 1973 as a language academy teaching English as a Second Language and Spanish, has grown into one of the state’s leading workforce training providers with five STVT campuses in South Texas in Brownsville, McAllen, San Antonio, Corpus Christi and Weslaco, plus a campus in North Texas that is rebranding to STVT-Arlington this fall.

“Education remains the key to unlocking access to a meaningful career with a living wage so people can provide for themselves and their families. I am proud to be a part of this life-changing step in the lives of our students,” said Vanessa Pardo, Executive Director of STVT-McAllen. “STVT is part of the fabric of the community, a role we do not take lightly. As educators it is our job to inspire and motivate students to empower themselves so they can become the people they are meant to be.”

STVT is part of Ancora’s network of post-secondary vocational schools and one of the nation’s leading workforce training providers. Since opening its doors 50 years ago, nearly 40,000 individuals have graduated from an STVT program. In addition to the training it provides, STVT is a steady employer in the region, having employed close to 1,200 people since its founding.

“The breadth of our work can be seen throughout the region,” said Daylan Childress, Vice President of Operations for Ancora, parent company of STVT. “If you walked into a healthcare facility in McAllen, one of our graduates might have helped you. Or that Amazon package on your front porch?  It might have been delivered by one of our CDL graduates. Familiar with SpaceX? Our welding graduates have been hired as welders there. Our students are making a real difference in our communities and the local economy.”

The History of STVT

STVT began operations in October 1973 as the Texas Language Academy offering English as a Second Language (ESL) and Spanish. Over the years as industry grew in the Rio Grande Valley, the school expanded beyond teaching languages at a single school by adding more campuses and new educational and workforce training offerings to help meet regional demand.

The name officially changed to South Texas Vocational Technical Institute in 1982 and today the school network continues to meet the needs of the regional economies it serves by providing a qualified, skilled workforce in a slew of fields from skilled trades like welding, HVAC and automotive, to other training programs in CDL, healthcare, dental, business studies, medical coding and more.
